About The Screwtape Letters

The Screwtape Letters is one of C.S. Lewis’ most popular and influential works, along with The Chronicles of Narnia. First published in 1942, the book brought worldwide attention to Lewis through its piercing insight into human nature, temptation, and the unseen battle of spiritual warfare.

The stage production creates a morally inverted universe set in an eerily stylish office in hell, where God is referred to as the “Enemy” and the devil as “Our Father Below.” The story follows His Abysmal Sublimity, Screwtape, and his creature-demon, Toadpipe, as they train the apprentice demon Wormwood in the art of tempting an unsuspecting human on earth.

Both humorous and unsettling, The Screwtape Letters invites audiences to see temptation, pride, distraction, and spiritual complacency through the brilliant and unforgettable lens of C.S. Lewis.

A Nationally Acclaimed Production

The Screwtape Letters has played to sold-out audiences in major cities across the United States, including New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Washington D.C., Atlanta, Boston, Houston, Dallas, and in London. More than 600,000 people have seen the production, which continues to attract a national following.

The Associated Press called Lewis’ The Screwtape Letters “Devilishly funny!” Newsweek named it among the best productions of the year in New York City, and The Chicago Sun-Times called it “Smart!…Sizzling Entertainment!”
